The View from Newfoundland #2

The Southern Shore of Newfoundland is a nature lover’s paradise.  Hiking, sea kayaking, whale watching, iceberg hunting and so much more!

Witless Bay

We we lucky enough to live on the Southern Shore in a small, scenic, traditional Newfoundland coastal community called “Witless Bay” for a couple of years.  We had a little house on the Atlantic Ocean where we could watch the whales in the summer and the ocean’s fury in the winter.  Witless Bay is only about a 25 minute drive from St. John’s, the capital of Newfoundland, along the Irish Loop which is one of the many scenic driving routes in Newfoundland and was a good transition for us never having lived “around the bay” before.

These are my favorite photos from Witless Bay.  All photos are mine. Enjoy the view through my lens 🙂

The East Coast Trail system offers a wilderness hiking experience. Starting from the historic city of St. John’s, you can head north or south over 265 kilometers of developed and maintained trails.

The Witless Bay Ecological Reserve is home to more than 260,000 pairs of the province’s official bird, the Atlantic puffin. They nest here during the late spring and summer as well as thousands of Leach’s storm-petrels.  black-legged kittiwakes and common murres. I am always in awe when I see puffins!
